Bloodchild Assessment

1.     The blood child started out really interesting with the concept that humans almost destroyed themselves and are now under the care of an alien race called Tlic. It was interesting to see how the aliens would feed them non-fertile eggs to keep them healthy and prolong their life, while also keeping them in a docile dream like state, so that they could implant eggs in their body and have them be hosts. The story takes a slightly disturbing turn for me when you find out that the aliens only care for the humans so that they can carry their egg children. The whole scene with the process of implanting the egg and hearing how they retrieve the egg grossed me out and deeply disturbed me when the main character still agreed to go along with the egg implanting. Overall the story was interesting, but left me with an unsettling feeling.

2.     The elements that I was able to connect with are the whole birthing process. Females are expected to give birth at least once in their life and if you say that you don’t want children they tell you “oh give it time you’ll want them”. Or they give you a small pitying smile like not wanting to have children is the worst thing in the world. The scene where the main character doesn’t want to go through with the egg process and his Tlic says she’ll go to his sister instead, it reminds me of when a woman is in a relationship and she doesn’t want to have children but the husband does, it is expected that she have children since he wants them even though its her going through the process not him. I also connected with the fact that seeing diagrams of the birthing process and actually seeing it is quite different. There are many things that the diagram doesn’t tell you about giving birth or what you may actually experience. Most of what you hear about giving birth isn’t that pleasant and is quite painful.

3.     The medium that I would change it too would be to television that way the viewer would be able to explore the history of the war between the humans and the aliens more deeply and the process of the aliens turning the humans into docile host to birth their children and how the conditions used to be. By having the story turned into a television series you would be able to have different views and experiences of the situation, not only of the humans but also of the Tlics.
