The Martian

The Martian falls under the genre of Science Fiction with its understanding of science to explain the universe the story is set in. One of the main reason that The Martian is placed in this genre is because of the science and technology of the events being described to the viewer from Mark’s logs. This is thoroughly elaborated on and is fully explained to the viewer how and why these events were caused. The Martian doesn’t just fall under science fiction; it also has several elements of other genres, such as, action, adventure, and drama..

The story of The Martian is told in past tense from Mark Watney’s logs to NASA. The tone of the story is greatly affected by Mark’s personality and the fact that everything is written after the fact. The situation that Mark  is in is quite serious; he is stranded on Mars with no crew, not enough food, and with a destroyed antenna no means of contacting earth. The way Mark deals with stress is to crack jokes,  not that he doesn’t understand the seriousness of the situation but that he’s trying make light of the situation, which was one of the reasons why he was chosen to go on this mission. Mark faces many obstacles sometimes facing disaster after disaster; instead of accepting defeat Mark works harder to create new solutions. The Martian could be categorized in the action and adventure genre since the protagonist Mark has a mission and faces obstacles that lead to desperate situations that cause the protagonist to take risky actions. An example of a desperate situation Mark faced was when he realized he didn’t have enough water to drink and water the plants with. Mark comes up with the idea that he is going to combine the HAB’s reserves of hydrogen and oxygen to create water. The process of this task is essentially the same as creating a bomb; one wrong move and Mark could blow up not only the lab but himself too. The Martian could also be categorized as a drama with Comedic tones; seeing that the logs hold not only Marks emotional development dealing with the effect of being isolated and facing life-threatening situations, but also the way Mark presents these life threatening situations with humor and with the intention of lighting up the situation and entertaining the viewer.
